Patch testing facial products: a calm mini-protocol

4 min read · Updated October 30, 2026

A small test cannot catch every reaction, but it catches many.

In brief

  • Inner arm or behind the ear are common test spots.
  • Wait as long as the product or your clinician suggests.
  • Stop if you sting, swell, or blister.

Why bother

Fragrances, preservatives, and acids can bother some people. A full-face first try raises the stakes.

A simple method

  1. Apply a pea-size amount to a clean inner forearm.
  2. Leave uncovered as directed.
  3. Check over 24–48 hours for redness or itch.

If you react

Wash off, stop use, and ask a pharmacist or clinician if it is more than mild.

Limits

Patch tests miss some delayed or site-specific reactions. When unsure, ask a professional.
